DLA Piper Family

Commissioned in 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic for the new offices of DLA Piper, this powerful work by Gunditjmara and Torres Strait Islander artist Lisa Waup considers the connections we share with one another through a layering of line and topography.

Waup’s practice is studio-based and involves the creation of objects with a strong connection of symbology and materiality, which connects her to family, Country, history and story. She works across weaving, printmaking, photography, sculpture, textiles and installation. Her work eloquently illustrates her life’s journey through discovery and connection. Waup’s practice highlights the importance of tracing lost history, ancestral relationships, Country, motherhood and time which ultimately are woven stories of her past, present and future into contemporary forms.

Created in collaboration with DLA Piper and Hassell.

Project Type: Placemaking, Commission

Family is symbolically expressed in the circle motif for me – circles mean family. Also symbolises the ripples in the ocean – continuous – like family and the connections I have with my family, and chosen family – never ending. The interwoven connections, and different paths that bring us home.
