Swatch the Future is an annual project that culminates in an online exhibition. In the past we have asked participants to imagine a future predicament and develop a textile design solution. The speculative worlds have often been quite bleak and apocalyptic and resemble what is increasingly becoming the new normal.

For this iteration of the project, participants were not asked to predict doom and gloom, but to look at the current state of the world and develop a textile design concept that seeks to improve the future in some way and help us navigate it. The scope of issues these projects touch on spans climate change, food production, physical and mental health, and capitalism. Their physical outcomes engage with a range of traditional and unconventional materials and techniques. The designers have used knitting, weaving, surface manipulation, embroidery and a range of other experimental and innovative techniques and materials to develop solutions to problems in new potential worlds.
