Throughout history, the amphora has been persistently reimagined in the hands of contemporary makers. So, what is the amphora of today, and what is its significance? Twenty ceramic artists have been invited to reinterpret the classic vessel, exploring it as an object of utility and connection to the human experience. From its most foundational use as a container and links to trade, to its function as a highly decorated, ceremonial object full of expression and storytelling, the amphora will be explored for its tangible connection between art and life. The new amphorae presented in this exhibition will speak to the ideas and practices of our time, as they have since antiquity.

Modern Amphora is the second in a series of exhibitions honouring iconic objects of functional craft and design with a material-driven approach. The exhibition will be presented as part of Melbourne Design Week.
