Time Talker Alexander Knox

aluminium, bronze, fluoropolymer paint

Naarm/Melbourne-based artist Alexander Knox produces large-scale public artworks and kinetic sculptures, influenced by both the natural and contemporary world.

Time Talker is a sculptural stack of Blue Mussel shells arranged into a humanlike totemic figure, referencing a time when the Docklands and extensive shell middens formed the wetlands ecosystem of the Birrarung (Yarra Delta). Mussel have existed virtually unchanged over 245 million years. They have served as a vital food source for our First Peoples and as natural filters maintaining water health. Time Talker’s lustrous, rippled surface also highlights the unique and strange beauty of marine life. Inside the top shell, a small spiral crustacea has made its home, symbolising the hope and resilience of all creatures living together within the marine environment.
