Bastard is the ceramic studio of German artist Astrid Salomon, based in Melbourne.
Born in Germany, she later lived in Berlin, Hamburg , Sydney and NewYork. First studied Photography and worked as a Fashion Photographer for many years, then turning to directing. All the while she was painting, writing and experimenting with clay.
There are different series she approaches with her ceramic practice, always exploring a new angle through a limited body of work, including hand building techniques like coiling and slab building, as well as working with slip casts. The ideas for her work often draw inspiration in the emotional experience and the various stages and of the human condition.
For me, my pieces are like people, I like to allow each one it’s individual quirks.
