Potter Jack Balfour is based in North Melbourne, Australia and is the founder of Neo Ceramics.
Jack's work responds to traditions of making that have existed for millennia and establishes a connection to place through the material. His work with clay sees his making both sculptural and functional pieces informed by the Australian landscape and classical ceramics. He often uses local clay from construction sites, bottle glass, discarded bluestone, wood-ash and shells to formulate glazes and colour clay bodies.
He has a particular interest of Korean forms from the Joseon Dynasty and Chinese celadon and Chun glazes from the Song Dynasty.
See Jack's work within "Unearthed" at Craft Victoria 1st - 31st October 2022.
"There are a lot of unknowns when you’re grinding down rust-encrusted nails, shells, or slate but at the same time, you can understand the chemistry that exists within those materials. You’re transforming them into another state and I’ve been able to find applications for every piece."
