Lucinda Johnson-Cornes (Pitjantjatjara)

Lucinda Johnson-Cornes is a textile artist of proud Pitjantjatjara descent. Using her hands to express emotion and memory within work, Johnson-Cornes’ practice integrates various mediums that tell stories of connection to both her community and cultural heritage. Her textile-based work fuses her passions for creative writing, intuitive hand-sewing processes, and the use of natural materials. Spiritual and sentimental by nature, the material process behind the works is as impactful and important as the outcome itself.

Johnson-Cornes graduated with a Bachelor of Textile (Design) (Honours) at RMIT University in 2024 and was the recipient of the 2024 Koorie Heritage Trust Encouragement Award for her graduate work.

Rust dye colours speaking to me intensely, showing me the desert landscapes of a place I’ve never been. Hand-sewn intuitively, stringing together the resemblance of a map. A map of what was, what could have been and what will always be.
