Peter Cummings grew up in the 1950's in an isolated rural area, exploring the natural world which had a lasting influence on his life outlook. Most of his working life has been people oriented, observing and operating as an adjunct to their personal lives. Coming upon glass engraving was a revelation that has lasted 40 years and still has the magic of drawing with light. Tracking down books and equipment to teach himself has been slow, and the internet is welcomed. Using a sandblaster, drills with assorted burrs and now a lathe with diamond wheels has meant continual growth through experimentation. Standard commercial forms, specific blown and collaborative pieces, as well as fusing new developments means the widest range of glass blanks. Two years at Bairnsdale TAFE and one year at Frankston TAFE round out an education in visual arts, complimented by a large library sourced mostly from overseas. Figurative Narrative may be a label, with Expressionist and Social Realist leanings.
Our roots are in the depth of the woods-on the banks of streams, among the mosses — Emile Galle. I draw and carve people stories that I see all around me, as they relate to their surroundings.
