Prue Venables is an award-winning Australian ceramicist. Her practice explores complex and unusual approaches to working with porcelain, challenging the significance of daily objects and highlighting the richness they bring to our lives. Motivated by a search for simplicity and stillness, her work is pared back, serene and deceptively simple. Educated at the Harrow College of Art in London and holding a Master of Fine Art (Ceramics) from RMIT, Prue has been practicing her craft since 1977. With a distinguished exhibition history, Prue has also mentored and taught generations of ceramicists.
Her work is collected by major institutions and public galleries and private institutions in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, UK, USA, Canada, Japan. She is a former President of Craft Victoria, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in London and the 9th Living Treasure, Master of Australian Craft. In 2023, Prue was selected as one of only thirty finalists in the internationally esteemed Loewe Foundation Craft Prize for their exhibition at the Noguchi Museum in New York.
Prue is represented by Gallery Sally Dan-Cuthbert, Sydney.
"I love making and am energised daily by learning new things. My practice and the mediums of both metal and ceramics provide me with constant challenges and opportunities to play and experiment and learn. Making brings me joy, frustration, excitement – the full gamut of feelings."
