Ruby Brown is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice explores themes of sensation and our bodily connection to the world. Born in Ōtepoti, Aotearoa, Ruby grew up in a family of painters and makers. She has Ngāpuhi roots alongside Scottish and Danish heritage. Ruby now resides on Wurundjeri land and makes work from her home-based studio.
Ruby’s notable solo exhibitions include ‘Recent Works’ (2023) at LON Gallery and ‘Touch’ (2021) with CAVES Gallery. She has participated in group shows like ‘The Daylight Show’ (2024) at Föenander Gallery in Aotearoa and ‘Itineraries of Escape’ (2023) at Side Gate. Various private Australia, Aotearoa and Europe–based collections have acquired her pieces. Ruby has benefited from residencies, such as ‘He Whakaari Ātārangi: Shadow Play’ (2023) at Correspondences Studios, focusing on integrating movement into her art. She holds a Graduate Certificate in Visual Art from the Victorian College of the Arts and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Otago. While working as a carer for creatives, Ruby developed relationships that enriched her artistic perspective and still impact her artwork today.
