Simon Bol

Simon started woodturning in 2004 on early retirement from a career in natural science. He is driven by new discoveries. Every new block of wood on the lathe is the start of a new journey. Having a keen interest in the complexity, order and elegance of the natural world, Simon tries to let the wood decide how to proceed.

Simon’s designs could be considered an act of curation rather than creation, expressing the unique inherent characters of each piece of wood. Simon strives for simplicity and is wary of distracting decorations. His work often expresses a sharp line or a delicate surface terminating in a thin edge. Other times, natural ‘imperfections’ tell the life story of the tree that provided the wood. Every piece evokes the urge to touch and feel its beauty.

It is an exciting act to facilitate a vibrant new conversation between a mute piece of wood and the eyes and hands of an unknown spectator.
