Steve Lees is a Trentham-based ceramic artist primarily working with stoneware and porcelain. He started his career in graphic design, completing his Bachelor of Design (Hons) at Swinburne University. Whilst working as a graphic designer, Steve cultivated his interest in ceramics and has since developed his practice under the mentorship of Shane Kent and Kate Wischusen at the School of Clay and Art (SOCA). In his ceramic work, Steve is driven by a fascination with the textures and patterns found in nature, and how these elements interact and transform over time. He endeavors to recontextualize these natural elements, translating them into new forms and interpretations through experimental surface textures and decoration. Steve specializes in creating functional ceramic art, primarily using wheel-thrown and hand-built techniques to craft vessels and objects. His background in graphic design subtly influences his work, bringing a unique sense of balance, form, and decoration.
