Established as a textile artist, Kanat has previously worked for ten years as a jeweller. Seeking to inject a sense of gravity into her practice, Kanat looked to her jewellery heritage and its hard gem and heavy materials. Embarking on the journey through exploration and play, her forms evolved instead into bronze, a solid, weighty, antidote to tapestry's warp and weft warpped around air. Yet, in their rigid form, the bronze castings manifest the gentle qualities of woven fibres and bleeding tones of Kanat's signature. These material translations, grounded and heavy, give a sense of cementing Kanat in this visceral world.
