Thao Bui (b. 1986) is an emerging artist with an Advanced Diploma in Jewellery and Object Design from Melbourne Polytechnic. Drawing on her background in psychotherapy, sexology, and nursing, Bui explores complex, and sensitive themes that invite reflection. The current body of work is inspired by Vietnamese music composed during the 1960s-80s, with 'Rain' and 'Ocean' often appearing as recurring central motifs. These songs often convey a duality between presence and escapism, particularly in the absence of immediate resolution. Drawing on these motifs, Bui intuitively embroiders and hand-sculpts a form into shape to create a piece that can be adorned.
