How did the idea of your work come about?
A meticulous exploration of materials and processes influenced the concept behind 'Permutations: The Degrees of Freedom'. This large-scale paper sculpture, delicately suspended in the ethereal space of mid-air, emerged from a thoughtful and gradual creative journey.
At its core, this artwork aims to unravel the myriad ways in which elements can be meticulously arranged and structured. The resulting geometric form, situated at the heart of the artwork, serves as the visual vocabulary, while the permutations—captured through the intricate dance of threads—constitute the formal language of my artistic expression. 'Permutations' stands as a testament to the ongoing tension and balance between opposing creative forces, where the structured foundation of rule-based artistry harmonises with the whimsical essence of randomness.
The creative process unfolded through the rigorous application of a methodical approach, with precise stitching of intricate patterns into the paper, utilising cotton thread to meticulously traverse predetermined points along a carefully traced path, confined within predefined boundaries. However, a pivotal moment in the evolution of the artwork occurred when I chose to introduce randomness as a deliberate and calculated departure. This transformative decision marked a divergence from the realm of rigid control, ushering in a phase where the artwork was allowed to develop organically in response to the unpredictable influence of water.
Water, renowned for its transformative qualities, became a disruptive force that perturbed the once-immaculate alignment of threads. It signified a departure from the realm of strict control, leading to an embrace of fluid adaptability within the creative process. Coincidentally, this interaction with water presented challenges, including the weakening of the paper's fibres and the consequent susceptibility to tearing as the weft threads adapted to support the undulating form. The engagement with water symbolised a critical and transformative juncture where materiality and process converged, unveiling a trove of hitherto unforeseen possibilities within the artwork
What were the highlight and most challenging aspects during the making process?
During the creation of "Permutations: The Degrees of Freedom," the artistic journey was marked by highlights and notable challenges. These elements shaped the unique character of the artwork.
Highlights: The most significant highlight was the gradual transformation of my artistic vision into a tangible piece. As I worked on the sculpture, I witnessed my initial concepts evolve into unexpected forms. This transformative process was not only inspiring but also deeply rewarding. The project allowed me to push the boundaries of my artistic practice, providing ample opportunities for experimentation with materials and techniques. This freedom of expression fueled my creativity and encouraged me to explore new dimensions within my work. Another highlight was witnessing the interplay between order and randomness, seeing these abstract concepts come to life in a visually compelling manner.
Challenges: One of the central challenges was striking a delicate balance between meticulous control and the introduction of randomness. Maintaining this equilibrium was crucial, as it directly influenced the outcome and character of the artwork. The tension between order and chaos required constant consideration and adjustment. Adapting to the unpredictable influence of water presented another significant challenge. Incorporating water as an artistic element demanded flexibility and a willingness to navigate unforeseen shifts in the creative process. Moreover, working with delicate materials like paper and threads posed inherent constraints. Balancing the structural integrity of the artwork with the desired aesthetic was a meticulous process, requiring careful problem-solving and craftsmanship.
