Many creative businesses rely on a team of skilled practitioners to design, make and deliver their projects. Concurrently, makers often also rely on a second job to fund their creative practices, or supplement their income.
In the October Advice Clinic, Volker Haug, lighting designer and founder of Volker Haug Studio, will share how he has successfully built a thriving design business with a robust team of skilled makers over the last two decades. Speaking to his experience of working symbiotically with other skilled makers to develop his design studio while supporting their independent ambitions, Volker will share his tips for anyone considering expanding their business and employing a team.

Volker Haug is the founder of eponymous Melbourne-based decorative lighting practice, Volker Haug Studio. Volker began his career working under pioneering Australian lighting designer Geoffrey Mance. From these early professional encounters sprang a perspective on lighting design that is unrestricted by traditional ways of thinking about the medium. This formative experience and his own circuitous path into design fostered the sense of experimentation and joy that formed the basis of his own practice. Remaining true to this sense of community, possibility, and reconstruction, Haug has formed an international design family in his adoptive hometown of Melbourne, Australia and, over time, a unique internal design language has emerged, making for the studio’s creative articulation today.
