In late 2024, Sovereign Hill unveiled sculptural commissions by five Wadawurrung artists - Aunty Marlene Gilson OAM, Dr. Deanne Gilson, Tammy Gilson, Kait James, and Lynette Fagan – to create sculptures that reflect the profound impact of colonisation, while celebrating the enduring connections to land, culture, and the future. These works now stand as powerful expressions of resilience and continuity, honouring the past while looking forward.
This talk brings together four of the five artists to collectively look back at the project, what it means to work alongside family and on Country to create large-scale public works. Delivered as a part of Craft Lab’s Careers in Craft Seminar Day, the talk will consider the potential for craft practice in the public domain and the importance of community in building a career in the arts.
