Were it not for shadows, there would be no beauty. In Praise of Shadows invites you to embark on a journey into the intricate dance between light and darkness. Inspired by Jun'ichirō Tanizak's 1933 essay on aesthetics, this exhibition delves into the beauty that emerges from the interplay of shadows cast by a collection of masterfully crafted objects. Prepare to be entranced by an evening of immersive artistry as you explore this showcase from contemporary Melbourne makers with a focus on the idea of light and shade in design.

The materials employed – from delicate paper and gleaming metal to wax and the rich depth of black ink – all contribute to the intricate dance of luminosity and obscurity that defines their work. The carefully constructed exhibit beckons you to explore the nuanced contours of each piece, unveiling the delicate choreography of illumination and concealment that brings them to life.

In Praise of Shadows challenges us to see beauty in a new light – or perhaps, in the absence of it.
