Memory Palace brings together ceramicist Tessy King with painter Carissa Karamarko in an exhibition that translates significant periods in their lives – King’s experiences of early motherhood, and Karamarko establishing Melbourne as her new home. King layers her textural hand built vessels with markings taken from her toddler’s early scribblings, distorting them with her own material play – scratching, drawing and painting with layers of underglaze, glaze, lustres and vitreous enamels. Karamarko paints still-lifes embellished with sculptural details, drawing from her extensive photographic documentation of her life, each work representing a place, a meal, a memory that has shaped her sense of home in Melbourne. Memory Palace is a dialogue between painter and ceramicist representing domestic and everyday experiences in layered and gestural works that both abstract and honour the content.
