Visit the studio of four contemporary makers working across glass, jewellery and ceramics making in Session One of the Virtual Open Studios program presented as part of Craft Contemporary. Taking place live via Zoom, go behind the scenes into the creative environments of these makers and gain a deeper understanding of their processes with exclusive insights and demonstrations.

Tag along with glass artist Ruth Allen on a dynamic studio tour of her studio and hot shop. During the session, Ruth will give an insight into her creative and teaching practices touching on the challenges and opportunities of working with glass.


11:30am - 12:00pm / Felicity Jane Large

Discover the colourful world of anodised jewellery with jeweller Felicity Jane Large. During the session, Felicity will showcase the anodising process as well as demonstrating masking and engraving techniques, which are used to apply multiple colours and patterns to a single piece. She will also touch on the limitations of working in these unusual metals, and how this often leads to interesting design solutions.


12:00pm - 12:30pm / Maryam Ebtekar

During her Virtual Open Studio, contemporary jeweller and artist Maryam Ebtekar will demonstrate the process of making paper pulp, and how this can be utilised in a jewellery making context. In addition to demonstrating the key processes in her practice, Maryam will take audiences though her studio space.


12:30pm - 1:00pm / Astrid Salomon

For this virtual studio opening Astrid will show you her studio from where she works in the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. While she takes you through her everyday process as a ceramicist with making work, testing glazes, experimenting with new shapes, recycling the mishaps and scraps. In her workshop she will explain and demonstrate the finishing touches at one of her pieces.
