A System of Melodic Reminders stands as a score of gesture and action, noted through weaving and mark-making on paper. It serves as a mnemonic technique to trace and record memories lost and found. A method of repetitive stitching largely governs the order of the work until it is interrupted and transformed by the application of water. The transformative qualities of water produce a shift from rigorous control and allow space for change and modification in the system. These moments bear the power to warp and wrinkle the paper's surface into topographical forms reminiscent of bodily and mountainous landscapes. At the same time, water weakens the fibres, making the paper vulnerable to tearing as the weft threads are tightened like a stringed instrument to support the undulating form. It is a delicate and tender moment between materiality and process.

Rebecca Diele is a multi-disciplinary artist working across weaving, mark-making installation and digital technologies. Her creative process is a translation between material and system of structure against a broader context of order and power. A dichotomy between total control and chaos is negotiated throughout her work. She holds a Master of Contemporary Art from the Victorian College of the Arts.
