Shelley Simpson is the Founder and Creative Director of Mud Australia, creating elegant and timeless porcelain homewares and lighting.

Founded in 1994, Shelley has personally developed every Mud Australia design over the past 28 years starting from her studio garage to now global business with over 100 employees. Every piece is handmade in Mud Australia’s Sydney studio using a highly nuanced and hands-on process, working with over 90 silhouettes using Limoges porcelain clay and quality pigments and glaze. The end result is a highly functional and handcrafted product that will happily fit into any interior, providing a timeless and ethical alternative to mass-produced ceramics.

Through Shelley’s creative vision and sage business mind, Mud Australia has become an Australian design icon with 10 stores across Sydney, Melbourne, Byron Bay, Los Angeles, New York and London. Despite global expansion, Mud Australia has remained faithful to their core values of handcraft, sustainability, collaboration and community, actively building relationships with the people who buy, use and love the product. Since 2020 Mud Australia is a Climate Neutral business certified through South Pole.

Shelley developed the Shelley Simpson Ceramic Prize in 2020 to support emerging ceramics artists, with the annual winner receiving a $10,000 cash prize to further pursue their ceramics career, and a mentor-mentee relationship with Shelley the following year.
