Join Tantri Mustika and learn how to create your very own mosaic artworks with discarded archeological fragments from the heart of Melbourne.

In this workshop attendees will create a unique patterned artwork combining discarded materials from the Metro Tunnel dig with a mixture of found, recycled and handmade tiles. This workshop aims to prompt thought around the beauty of found objects all around us and the importance of recycling and reusing materials to create sustainably beautiful artworks that save “rubbish” from being simply destined for landfill.

All necessary tools and materials including discarded Metro Tunnel archaeological fragments will be provided and no prior experience/skill is required. Attendees will then get to take their mosaic masterpieces home with a container of supplied grout to finish their projects at home once the glue has set.

Date & Time: 2:00-5:00pm, Saturday May 13, 2023
Location: Collingwood Yards (Unit 4, Upper Ground Level, Perry Street Building)
Cost: Free (limited availability)

This workshop is presented in collaboration with the Metro Tunnel Creative Program.

About the Metro Tunnel Project’s archaeological digs

The largest archaeological digs in Victorian history took place in the heart of the CBD as part of the Metro Tunnel Project. More than a million artefacts, some dating back more than 180 years to the early days of European settlement in Melbourne, were found in archaeological investigations ahead of excavation works for the Metro Tunnel. Architectural remains found on site included wheel ruts, cesspits, bluestone footings, and timber structures of cottages, shops, hotels, and pubs. Significant items are now permanently stored by Heritage Victoria for future generations. Non-significant items are being shared with artists to transform into new craft objects.
