Metro Tunnel Creative Program Workshops

Craft x Metro Tunnel Creative Program

Presented in partnership with the Metro Tunnel Creative Program, this workshop series invites Melbourne’s public to join three of the Unearthed artists in transforming discarded archaeological fragments from the Metro Tunnel dig into works of art.

In the three workshops held throughout May 2023, local artists Tantri Mustika, Anna Varendorff and Dan Bowran will guide participants to reimagine discarded fragments excavated from the heart of Melbourne into contemporary objects through craft techniques.

The Craft x Metro Tunnel Creative Program workshops are free; however, spots are limited and registrations essential. No prior skill is required and all tools and materials will be provided.

Note: All workshops are now booked out.

About the Metro Tunnel Project’s archaeological digs

The largest archaeological digs in Victorian history took place in the heart of the CBD as part of the Metro Tunnel Project. More than a million artefacts, some dating back more than 180 years to the early days of European settlement in Melbourne, were found in archaeological investigations ahead of excavation works for the Metro Tunnel. Architectural remains found on site included wheel ruts, cesspits, bluestone footings, and timber structures of cottages, shops, hotels, and pubs. Significant items are now permanently stored by Heritage Victoria for future generations. Non-significant items are being shared with artists to transform into new craft objects.
